Primer Red is a colour found in practically every culture, appearing in everything from Venetian palaces to Vietnamese temples, where red earths were plentiful and relatively easy to come by. Use it for rustic pieces or as a base for sophisticated colours like Château Grey or Versailles. It also works beautifully under gilding.
Shown with complementary green colour, Duck Egg Blue and as a bright stool done in a Primer Red base with Dark Wax, and Florence Legs and Amsterdam Green back rest support, also covered in Dark Wax. Also shown as detail on a Giverny end table together with Antibes Green, Florence, Arles and Barcelona Orange against a Graphite wall. Also shown is as well as a kitchen cupboard of Greek Blue over layers of Primer Red and Napoleonic Blue, then distressed to show each layer. Cupboard set against a Scandinavian Pink wall. A Midcentury Modern living space starts with an Honfleur base with Barcelona Orange and Burgundy accents, set against a Provence wall. Next shown is a dresser done with a Primer Red Base, covered in Lem Lem and then distressed and covered in Clear Wax. Midcentury Modern chairs are given a fresh look by painting the bottoms Graphite, recovering with Linen Union in French Linen + Old White, and painting Primer Red, Aubusson Blue, English Yellow and Olive as examples.
Primer Red is also a great base color, shown mixed with Aubusson Blue, to create a Mahogany wood look for the top of a piece, to be finished in Dark Wax. French chairs are first painted Primer Red, then Olive and distressed and upholstered in Ticking in Olive.
